Review if you carry everything. Adjusts the list of safety material according to the type of crossing or the environment.
Bring the safety elements by hand if you have to use them in the water. Remember to carry everything you carry on deck. On the covers only the essentials.
Study the weather ( windguru , Meteosim , …). Centers Maritime Rescue and Radio Stations issue bulletins on Channel 16 VHF .
Avoid taking unnecessary risks. Do not go sailing in case of wind, waves or poor visibility. Keep in mind that weather conditions can change very quickly on the coast.
Make a navigation plan and communicate it to someone on the ground, you can notify rescue services. Fundamental data navigation plan : Points of departure and arrival. Schedule. Itinerary. Alternatives in case of emergency. Description of the kayaks, their colors and quantity of paddlers. Description and data of own cars. This pattern should be easier to comply with the app Safetrx that automates many of these little things.
It studies the possible difficulties of the itinerary and prepares a chart of navigation noting bearings, distances, and landing points in case of emergency. This is very important if you do not know the area navigation .
Do not alter the navigation plan except by force majeure. If you change it immediately.
At the end of the journey, always notify the person on the ground who follows the navigation plan.

BROWSING

Always wear placed life jacket , it is a healthy habit.
Do not assume unnecessary risks, know your own physical and technical limits . Know the limits of your peers and do not let them pass you.
Avoid sail alone . Try to do it in a group, it is more fun and much safer (minimum 3 kayaks).
Maintain visual contact with fellow travelers. Do not delay the group and do not go ahead. Establish a basic signal system for the group.
Respect other water users and avoid the risks of shock. We should never assume that the other boat has seen and maneuvered us properly.
Avoid going out to sea at sunset, if night falls it will be very difficult to see you.
Do not leave the coast unnecessarily.
Use a helmet if you can hit your head against the rocks or if you surf in the surf.
Try to make your kayak and clothes colorful, but without falling into kitsch 🙂
If you have experience do not leave a rookie in trouble alone. If you are newbie and you look bad ask for company. Nerves increase if you are alone, and make problems worse.
